How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on ActiViews starts with one question: will this computer handle what you plan to do with it, at home, for years?

A mini PC for email and video calls needs different parts than one for photo editing or two big screens. Here is how we sort that out.

1. We start with the job

First we pin down what the reader wants to do. Browsing and bills, office work, photo editing, a TV in the den or a two-monitor desk each set a different bar.

Then we look for the computers that clear that bar without paying for power you won't use.

2. We compare specs and ports

We check the processor, the amount and type of memory (RAM), the storage size and type, and the ports. That means HDMI and DisplayPort outputs, USB ports, Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

We also check whether Windows comes installed, whether the memory and storage can be upgraded, and what's in the box. Makers often sell the same model with different chips or memory, so we match each model number to its exact specs.

3. We read buyer feedback

We look for patterns in what owners report after using a mini PC for a while. Fan noise, heat, Wi-Fi drops, sudden restarts and support replies come up often.

One unhappy owner doesn't sink a computer. A repeated pattern does.

4. We score each pick

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A mini PC that's a great pick for a home office may score lower in a guide about photo editing.

Scores spread out on purpose, and a 10 is rare.

5. We keep guides current

Mini PC models change quickly, and some disappear from stores. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

We link only to new units, never renewed or refurbished listings. We skip products with a known recall.

What our picks are not

Our picks come from research, not lab benchmarks. We don't claim to have used every computer we cover.

Makers describe their own speed, noise and power figures. We name the brand when we repeat a claim, so you know where it came from.
